Android Tablet Guide for College Students in 2026

A tablet can cover a lot of college work: lectures, handwritten notes, textbooks and PDFs, research, and, with a keyboard, papers. This guide covers four Android tablets at different budgets, the apps worth installing, and how to set a tablet up for coursework.

Prices below are the list prices on Samsung’s and OnePlus’s US stores as noted. Tablet prices change often, and retailers frequently discount them, so check current prices and student discounts before you buy.

Best Tablets for Students

Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 — Best Overall for Students

Android Central’s guide to the best tablets for students, last updated in August 2026, names the Galaxy Tab S11 its best overall pick. It has an 11-inch 2,560 x 1,600 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ processor, 12GB of RAM and an S Pen in the box, and it supports Samsung DeX. Samsung’s store lists it with IP68 dust and water resistance. Android Central’s main complaints are the price and the lack of a 5G model.

Long-term support is a strength. Samsung has confirmed that the Tab S11 and Tab S11 Ultra will receive Android OS upgrades and security updates for seven years, according to SamMobile. The tablets launched with One UI 8 based on Android 16, so the update window easily covers a four-year degree.

Price: Samsung’s US store listed the 128GB Wi-Fi model at $999.99 in October 2026, but it is widely discounted. Samsung has since announced the Galaxy Tab S12+ and Tab S12 Ultra, SamMobile reports, so the S11 is no longer Samsung’s newest premium tablet. Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE — Best Value for Students

The Tab S10 FE was released in April 2025. According to GSMArena’s specifications, it has a 10.9-inch 1,440 x 2,304 IPS LCD at 90Hz, an Exynos 1580 chip, IP68 water resistance, microSD expansion and S Pen support, and it can now be updated to Android 16 with One UI 8.5. The LCD lacks the deep blacks of the Tab S11’s AMOLED, but it handles note-taking and reading well.

Samsung’s US store listed the 128GB Wi-Fi model at $549.99 in October 2026. Samsung’s update promise for the FE models is less clear than for its flagships: SamMobile reports that Samsung told a customer the tablets will get seven years of updates, without saying whether that covers both OS upgrades and security patches. If the FE is over budget, Android Central’s student guide picks the cheaper Galaxy Tab S10 Lite as its best value. It has a 10.9-inch LCD, an Exynos 1380 chip and an S Pen included, though Android Central notes that its processing power “leaves a little to be desired.”

OnePlus Pad Go 2 — Best Mid-Range Alternative

The OnePlus Pad Go 2 went on sale in North America in December 2025 for $400, according to Liliputing. It has a 12.1-inch 2,800 x 1,980 LCD with a 7:5 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultra chip, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 10,050mAh battery and OxygenOS 16 based on Android 16.

The taller 7:5 screen is the main reason to choose it for school. Andy Boxall’s review on Yahoo Tech notes that the shape is meant to suit reading and side-by-side multitasking. OnePlus estimates 15 hours of video playback per charge. The trade-offs: there is no IP rating, it weighs close to 600g, and the pen is an optional extra (the OnePlus Pad Go 2 Stylo, with 4,096 pressure levels, according to Liliputing).

Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ — Best Budget for Students

The Galaxy Tab A11+ is Samsung’s budget 11-inch tablet, offered with 128GB or 256GB of storage. Samsung’s US store listed the 128GB Wi-Fi model at $299.99 in October 2026. It handles lecture streaming, web research and document editing. It doesn’t come with an S Pen, though a basic capacitive stylus works for simple notes. Essential Apps for College

Note-Taking

Samsung Notes (Samsung tablets): handwriting with the S Pen, plus voice recordings that stay linked to what you write (see the lecture recording section below). On supported devices running One UI 6.1 or later, Samsung’s Galaxy AI features can also turn recordings into transcripts and summaries.

Notion: notes, databases and task lists in one workspace, useful for organizing course material across semesters. Notion’s Education Plan is free for individual students who sign in with their school email address.

Google Keep: quick capture for ideas, checklists and reminders, synced to your Google account.

Productivity

Google Workspace: Docs, Sheets and Slides are free with a Google account and support real-time collaboration on group projects.

Microsoft 365: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Many universities provide Microsoft 365 to students at no cost, so check your school’s student portal before you pay for a subscription.

Zotero: a free reference manager that syncs your research library across devices and works with Word and Google Docs for citations.

Reading and Research

Kindle and other e-book apps: many textbooks and course readings are sold as e-books, so compare formats and prices before buying print.

Xodo: a PDF reader and annotator for highlights, handwritten notes and form filling, with a finger or a stylus.

Google Scholar: an academic search engine for finding peer-reviewed sources, accessible in any browser.

Organization

Google Calendar: class schedules, assignment deadlines and exam dates, with reminders for recurring tasks.

Todoist: task management with due dates, priorities and projects, so you can group assignments by course.

Active Recall with Flashcards

AnkiDroid, the free, open-source Android version of Anki, uses spaced repetition to schedule flashcard reviews based on how well you know each card. Create cards from lecture notes or import shared decks. The larger screen shows diagrams and formulas more clearly than a phone.

PDF Annotation Workflow

Download course readings as PDFs, open them in Xodo or Samsung Notes, and annotate with a stylus or finger: highlight key passages, add margin notes, and write summaries. Saving the annotated files to cloud storage keeps them available on any device.

Lecture Recording with Samsung Notes

Samsung Notes can record audio while you write. According to Samsung’s guide to syncing voice recordings, when you play the recording back, your notes scroll along with it and what you wrote appears in time with the audio, so you can jump to the moment a point was made. On supported devices, Samsung Notes can also show a transcript and summary of the recording. Ask your instructor first, and follow your college’s policy on recording lectures.
