Android Tablet Productivity Setup Guide for 2026

A high-end Android tablet can handle much of a laptop’s workload, but only with the right accessories, apps and settings. This guide covers the hardware worth adding, how to set up Samsung DeX and other multitasking tools, the apps that matter for work, and the security settings to turn on if the tablet holds work data.

Essential Hardware

Keyboard

A physical keyboard is the single biggest upgrade for writing and email. Samsung’s accessories for the Galaxy Tab S11 series include the Book Cover Keyboard Slim, which adds a dedicated AI key, according to Samsung’s accessory guide. Samsung’s guide also describes it with a trackpad, but at least one buyer review on Samsung’s UK store says theirs has none, so check the listing for your model if you need one. For a more laptop-like setup, Samsung’s Pro Keyboard for the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra and Tab S12 Ultra has an aluminum body, a metal hinge and a trackpad 14.6% larger than the previous model’s. OnePlus also sells a Smart Keyboard for the Pad 3, which TechRadar’s reviewer used with the tablet.

Mouse or Trackpad

Android supports a mouse cursor, and a Bluetooth mouse makes text selection, spreadsheet work and window management far more precise than touch. If your keyboard has a trackpad, a separate mouse is still more comfortable for long sessions at a desk.

USB-C Hub

A USB-C hub adds the ports a tablet lacks: HDMI for an external monitor, USB-A for flash drives and peripherals, an SD card reader, and pass-through charging. Before buying one for a monitor setup, check that your tablet’s USB-C port supports video output. Samsung’s guidance for its Galaxy Tab S10+ and S10 Ultra, for example, is to connect through an HDMI adapter.

External Display

Samsung DeX can drive an external monitor. According to Samsung Business Insights, you connect a Galaxy Tab S10+ or S10 Ultra through an HDMI adapter and, with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, get “multiple resizable windows, drag-and-drop convenience and keyboard shortcuts.” DeX also works wirelessly with Miracast-enabled displays, and Samsung recommends a recent Samsung Smart TV or Smart Monitor for the best connection. Software Configuration

Office Suite

Microsoft 365 offers Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook for Android, with files synced through OneDrive. A Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription includes 1TB of OneDrive storage per user, according to the OneDrive Play Store listing. Everyday documents work well, but if you rely on complex spreadsheets or heavily formatted presentations, check how they look in the Android apps before you leave the laptop at home.

Google Workspace (free for personal use) includes Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive. According to Google’s offline guide, you can create, view and edit files without a connection on an Android tablet. Turn on Make recent files available offline in each app’s Settings, or mark individual files with Make available offline.

Cloud Storage

Set up at least one cloud service for automatic backup. Google gives each account up to 15GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos. Email and Calendar

Gmail and Google Calendar come preinstalled on most Android tablets. For Microsoft environments, Outlook combines email, calendar and contacts, and Samsung tablets also include Samsung Email.

Note-Taking and Task Management

Workflow Optimization

Split-Screen and Multi-Window

Android’s split-screen mode lets you pair apps side by side. Productive pairs include:

Email + Calendar, to review your schedule while replying
Browser + Notes, for research with notes alongside
Spreadsheet + Chat, for data work while keeping up with your team
PDF reader + Word processor, to keep reference material next to a draft

Manufacturers add their own tools on top. OnePlus’s Open Canvas, for example, lets you keep up to three apps open at once on the OnePlus Pad 3, according to TechRadar. Our multitasking tips guide covers more techniques.

Samsung DeX Workspace

The current version of DeX on Galaxy tablets works differently from older versions, so older guides can be out of date. According to Samsung’s DeX page:

Entering DeX: drag down from the top of any app, select the desktop space in recent apps, or tap + to create a new DeX desktop space.
Workspaces: you can have up to four workspaces, with a maximum of five apps open at once in each.
External monitors: connect to an external Smart monitor to expand your workspace and move apps across screens, or use wireless DeX with a compatible Smart monitor or Smart TV. To mirror your tablet instead, use Quick Settings > Wired DeX or Settings > Device Connections > Samsung DeX > Connected Display > Screen Mirroring.

Power users can go further. Android Police explains how Samsung’s Good Lock app (its MultiStar module) can enable higher-resolution output up to 4K on compatible monitors, remove the five-app limit, and reopen your last DeX apps automatically. It also recommends keeping Samsung Keyboard as the on-screen keyboard in DeX, since alternatives may not handle shortcuts such as Shift + Space, and checking your layout under Settings > General management > Physical keyboard.

Notification Management

Interruptions are the enemy of focused work. Use your tablet’s Do Not Disturb or focus settings to silence non-essential notifications during work hours, with exceptions for important contacts, and turn off notification categories you don’t need in each app’s settings.

Security for Work Use

If your tablet handles work data, turn on these protections:

Screen lock: use biometrics where available, backed by a strong PIN.
Secure Folder (Samsung): keeps work apps and files in a separate encrypted space.
Find Hub: Google’s renamed Find My Device service is on automatically once a Google Account is added. According to Google’s lost-device guide, remote locking or erasing requires the tablet to have power, be online and signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub turned on, and be visible on Google Play.
App permissions: review them regularly in Android’s privacy settings.
Updates: install system and security updates promptly.

Video Conferencing

Team Communication

Slack, Microsoft Teams and Google Chat all have Android apps. In DeX, they can sit in resizable windows alongside your work, so you can keep an eye on messages without switching screens.

Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share) sends files directly to nearby Android devices and Chromebooks. Google’s Quick Share for Windows app extends it to select Windows PCs. Google Drive and OneDrive handle cross-platform access.

Recommended Tablet for Productivity

For a DeX-based setup, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 is a strong all-rounder. Android Central names it the best overall tablet for students, citing its included S Pen, AMOLED display and DeX support, and Samsung has promised seven years of OS and security updates for it, according to SamMobile. Samsung has since announced the Galaxy Tab S12+ and Tab S12 Ultra, and the S12 Ultra is now listed in Samsung’s store. The OnePlus Pad 3 is the main non-Samsung alternative, with its large 7:5 display and Open Canvas multitasking, but it has no equivalent of DeX’s desktop mode.
